Looking out the window at the beauty of our recent snowfall, and thinking of the upcoming holidays, I feel that it is very appropriate to give “thanks” for our good fortune even though many families are so financially challenged with the current economic crisis.

27th Annual Membership Meeting, November 9, 2008

The passing of the beautiful autumn colors reminds all that winter is on the doorstep and the New Year is almost upon us.  It’s that time again for the Brighton Area Historical Society to have the 27th Annual Membership Meeting so that officers and board members can be elected for 2009.  Our meeting will be Sunday, November 9 from 1-4 PM at the Lyon School, located at 11455 Buno Road in Brighton Township.

Recognition Of The Past - State Of Michigan Historical Markers

The State of Michigan offers a Historical Marker Program to inform the public about buildings, structures, and sites of historical interest.   These markers inform the public of the importance of Michigan history.  Connections are made between the present and the past.  These connections encourage preservation of Michigan’s past and allow the public to develop a sense of identity that is unique to our state.  These markers encourage cultural tourism in the state by encouraging residents and visitors to investigate Michigan history and the state’s historic sites.

Preserving and Maintaining The Community Cemeteries

If you have visited the Bird, Pleasant Valley or Kensington Cemeteries located in Brighton Township over the past five years, you will note that there has been a priority given to the continuous improvements in the appearances of these cemeteries.  Many thanks go to the Brighton Township Board and to the Supervisor, Bud Prine.  Bud has established a Perpetual Maintenance Fund and the Board is in strong support of this Fund.   This Fund has annual money dedicated to the maintenance and renewal of these burial grounds.  It is a wonderful tribute to the early settlers of the Brighton Township community for these grounds to get a refreshing makeover and to receive the care and upkeep that has been lacking in past decades.
