In 1810 before William was born, the parents left Ireland and came to Pennsylvania. He had one sibling Robert Jr. In 1834 the family came to Brighton and settled in the NW quarter of the NW quarter of section 30 Brighton Township (in the area of Cross Street). At age 46, William was one of the first to enlist in Co. I, 5’h Michigan Infantry. This “Livingston County Company” was mustered under Captain John Gilluly and 2nd Lieutenant Charles H. Dennison (both in Old Village Cemetery. Major engagements of his unit included: Pohick Church and Pohick Run Virginia, Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Seven Days, Charles City Crossroad, Savage’s Station Virginia, White Oak Swamp, Glendale, Virginia, 2’° Bull Run, Malvern Hill, and Chantilly. Bigham was discharged for disability September 24, 1862 at Fort Ward, Virginia and returned home. He married and had one child, Robert J. Corporal Bigham filed for a pension in August 1876. His father was the founder of the Episcopal Church and donated land for this cemetery. Benjamin enlisted in Co. D, 11′” Michigan Infantry February 18, 1865. He was 28 years old. He was discharged August 18, 1865 and was admitted to Harper Hospital, Detroit August 28, 1865. When he returned home he married Katie V Pratt on September 15, 1868. They had three sons and a daughter (Coryden, J. Richard, Charles, and Jacintha Lucy). Private Clark was a resident in Brighton for 79 years. In fact he was a continuous resident of Brighton Village longer than any other person. He was an attorney in Brighton, a justice of the peace in 1885, Livingston County circuit court commissioner in 1866, Village postmaster; first Village clerk in 1867 and 1874 and Village president in 1877, ’78, ’79. He was appointed post office master by President Grant. B.T.O. Clark was the attorney who petitioned the court for pensions for many of the veterans in the cemetery. Clark was known as an authority on Brighton’s history. He was a Republican and president of Brighton’s Homecoming Association in 1907. He filed for a pension January 1888. When Clark died it was the Knights Templar that officiated at the funeral. His Brighton GAR Post #179 comrades were in attendance. Benjamin died of myocarditis. His widow filed for a widow’s pension November 1916. The Clark land, after remaining in the Clark name for more than 80 years, is now called Clark Lake Park. Cushing, Charles E	1846	1910	Civil War Veteran. Block 3, Plot 14, Row 9 Charles Cushing’s parents were Benjamin and Lovisa (Wallace). Benjamin died when he was 46 and Lovisa died when she was 71. As a young man Charles was a harness maker and for many years operated a shop near 307 W. Main Street, Brighton, Michigan. Charles enlisted March 17, 1865 in Co. F, 11th Michigan Cavalry as a Private. He was only 18 years old. The 11th Michigan was in Knoxville, Tennessee by March, 1865. The troops moved from east Tennessee to southwest Virginia and western North Carolina by April 17, 1865. The final move was to Pulaski, Tennessee and by July 20, 1865 the 11th consolidated with the 8″ Michigan Cavalry. He mustered out of Co. H, 8th Michigan Cavalry September 22, 1865 and returned home to Brighton and his mother. He applied for his pension October 17, 1887. He married Sarah Ellen (Case). After the war they owned an 80 acre farm in Green Oak Township where they built their home on the west side of Ann Arbor Road (Whitmore Lake Road) about ¾ miles south of Maltby Road. They had two sons. C. Leland died when he was less than a year old. Another son George died when he was three. They had also had one daughter Carrie. Charles was the treasurer of the Brighton Gun Club when it was organized in 1877. He was a member of the Brighton Fire Department and served as a Village trustee in 1877. There are ten others by the name of Cushing buried in the cemetery. Charles died a widower of a valular disease of the heart. Hayner, Josiah Cyrus	7 Jun 1824	11 Jul 1878	Block 3, Plot 1, Row 9 Josiah Hayner was born to parents George and Mary (Keller). At age 37, on August 16, 1861 he enlisted in Fowlerville’s Co. K, 9th Michigan Infantry as 1st sergeant. He held that rank until Co. K was captured by General Nathan Forrest at the Battle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He was paroled and sent to Camp Chase, Ohio July 13, 1862. He returned to his regiment at Murfreesboro, Tennessee March 23, 1863. Hayner was transferred to Invalid Corp (Veterans Reserve Corps) April 10, 1864. He mustered out February 10, 1865. Hayner married Maria (or Mariah) Bigham in Ypsilanti, July 3, 1851. Some records show that they had three children: Mary, Clara and Charles. The 1880 census showed he had eight children Eugene (1853), Celia (1855), Clarence (1858), Mary (1860), Irene (1865), William (1869), Robert (1873), and Kate (1874). By 1870, the census recorded that Josiah Hayner was a teamster. No value was listed for his real estate but $400 was listed as the value of his personal property. He filed for a pension in June 1876. Some sources have him born in New York State and others have him born in Ireland. With his mother he left Cork, Ireland and arrived in New York State on June 2, 1851. He was eight years old. The ship they took to come to New York State was the Hebe. On April 20, 1863 in Albany, New York, Benjamin enlisted in Co. C, 3rd New York Infantry. He was 19 years old. He was discharged and mustered out May 21, 1863 at Albany. His term of service had expired. Private Hogan was paid by the state of New York from April 20 to May 14, 1863. He received $8.64. By the 1880 census we find Benjamin living in Saginaw. It is recorded that he was a clerk after the war. Records showed he married Elizabeth. We do not know if they had any children. His parents were John and Mercy (Carr). He had three brothers and two sisters. There are no records to show where in Illinois John was living before he volunteered to serve in the Civil War. John enlisted in the 8th Illinois Infantry June 9, 1861 and mustered out August 26, 1861. He enlisted in Co. A, 8th Illinois Cavalry on December 13, 1863. Private Hutchings mustered out July 17, 1865 at Benton Barracks, St. Louis, Missouri. A disability occurred when he received a skull fracture after falling off his horse. He returned home to China, Illinois. The first date that places him in Brighton is 1879 when he was a street commissioner of the Village. In 1870 he married Sarah. She was 16. They had one daughter Mabel who was born in 1879 and one son Arthur (b 1881). John and Sarah lived in a home on the south side of North Street (the location of the present Masonic Lodge). Census reports show he was a carpenter and day laborer in Brighton. He was 67. He was a post commander of the Brighton GAR Post #179. Private Hutchings filed for an invalid pension May 1881. He died in Brighton in 1902 of an unknown illness. His widow filed for a widow’s pension August 1902. A bit of local history: Bert Bair’s mother took care of Sarah when she was in her old age. Block 3, Plot 7, Row 16 Andrew and Jane (Slover), parents of James Logan were from New York. James was born in New York. The family eventually moved to Williamston, Michigan. It was from here that James enlisted in Co. K, 9th Michigan Infantry October 15, 1861 as a private. His enlistment was to be for three years. He was 24 years old. He was one of 92 men from Livingston County who enlisted in the 9th Michigan Infantry. The 9th was the first Michigan regiment ordered to the western army of the “Army of the Ohio”. The regiment was sent to West Point, Kentucky to build fortifications (bridges and earthworks) on Muldraugh’s Hill and then to Elizabethtown, Kentucky (January 4 to March 1861). They moved to Nashville, Tennessee, March 19-23 and stayed on duty until May 28, 1862. The expedition to pursue the Confederate Army led them to Chattanooga, Tennessee (May 28-June 17, 1862). Company K and five other companies were captured. Logan was eventually discharged for disability at Columbus, Ohio, October 8, 1862. He was now 25 years and one day old when he returned to New York. Logan married Martha Brink. They had two children. His occupation was listed as saloon keeper and steward. He was the proprietor of a Grand River restaurant. Martha died and later he married Mary Kidd. He was a member of Brighton’s GAR Post #179, Maccabees Lodge and Masonic Lodge. He filed for an invalid pension October 1882. Private Logan died at home in Detroit His death notice listed the cause of death: “substantial nephritis and disease of the heart”. He also had chronic rheumatism. Henry Norton’s parents were Charles and Emily Electra (Culver). By age 14 the family was living in Brighton. He had one sibling – a sister Harriet (Durfee) who is in Old Village Cemetery. According to Pless (1981), he may also have a brother Allen born 1810. “Although we do not have any proof, it would appear that Allen was a brother of Henry.” Henry was a farmer in 1860 and his real estate value on the 1860 census was valued at $600.00. He was married to Sarah (Baetcke) before he left to enlist. Henry enlisted in Co. D, 15″* Michigan Infantry as a private on March 13, 1862. He was promoted to corporal. He mustered out May 19, 1862 in Monterey, Mississippi. He died in the hospital in Monterey May 29, 1862. Corporal Norton was only in the war for 2 ½ months. He is buried in Shiloh National Cemetery, Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee. His grave is #1567. The monument in Old Village Cemetery does not include his promoted rank of corporal. G, 3rd Michigan Cavalry out of Brighton February 10, 1864 as a private. He was 26 years old. The officers of Co. G were Captain Quackenbush, 1st Lieutenant Stevens both from Whitmore Lake, and 2nd Lieutenant Caldwell from Pontiac. By early 1864, the regiment spent time as provost guards in St. Louis where the men were awaiting the arrival of new horses, arms and equipment. Although still dismounted, the regiment left on May 18, 1864 and went to Little Rock, Arkansas. They were mounted on June 1, 1864 and began scouting through the state. They assisted in driving Confederate General Shelby beyond the Arkansas River, dispersing bands of guerrillas and capturing over 800 head of cattle. Joseph was discharged at Benton Barracks, Missouri, September 29, 1865. He returned to Michigan. He married Emily Jane (Smith) and had three children: Charles, Jenny and William. The 1870 census listed him as an implement farm dealer. The value of his real estate was $800 and $400 for his personal property. He was a member of the Brighton GAR Post #179. He died in 1899 from hepatic (liver) cancer. On October 14, 1900 his wife petitioned the court to receive his real estate (the widow’s right of dower). He is buried in Richmond National CemeteryVirginia. John Platt enlisted in Co. B, 6 Michigan Cavalry August 12, 1862 as a corporal. The 6 Michigan Cavalry carried on its rolls the name of more than 50 men from Livingston County. The regiment was mustered into service with 1200 men in October 1862. A few months later they left for Washington, D.C. mounted and equipped but not armed. During 1863 the Cavalry corps experienced much active service in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. He was taken prisoner in July 14, 1863 at the Battle of Falling Waters, Maryland. He died of disease caused by chronic diarrhea in Richmond Prison 1864. He was a trustee of this cemetery ever since the ground was platted for burials. He came to Brighton with his father when he was 26 years old. He moved from Lapeer in 1844. He married Minerva (Worden) (1824-1884). She is buried in the cemetery as is their daughter Florence. When the 15″ Michigan Infantry was organized he enlisted in Co. D, 15th Michigan Infantry and was made a first lieutenant in October, 1861. Less than a year later he was promoted to captain October 1, 1862. After the 15″ left Detroit they immediately engaged in battle at Shiloh, Five soldiers from Livingston County were killed. He mustered out Christmas Eve, 1862 and had an intra regimental transfer from Co. D to Co. A. He mustered out of Co. A on Christmas Eve, 1864. While Captain Pratt was in the 15th his regiment fought in major battles at Vicksburg, Mississippi, Decatur, Atlanta and Jonesboro in Georgia, and in the famous “March to the Sea” through Georgia with General Sherman. Of the 102 soldiers from Livingston County in the 15th, 11 were killed, one died in Andersonville Prison and 23 died of wounds or disease. After the war, Pratt returned to Brighton. It is recorded in several sources that he was buried in an unmarked grave on the Spotsylvania battlefield. Local newspaper articles reported that he was reburied in Old Village Cemetery. John was born to Charles and Elmina (Norton). Members of the Prosser family owned a paint supply business in Brighton circa 1910-1920’s. John Prosser’s memorial stone is next to his parents, sister, and aunt in a family plot. His siblings were Elizabeth, Jacob, William, Charles, Frank, and Harriet. John enlisted in Co. K, 20″ Michigan Infantry on August 8, 1862 in Chelsea, Michigan. Even though he enlisted in August, the regiment didn’t report to its Division until September 23. It was delayed because there were so many tents and equipment on the roads the regiment couldn’t move. It finally met up with the army at Antietam, Maryland. The battles of the 20th were Vicksburg, E. Tennessee Campaign, and Virginia Campaign. During this entire term of service, this regiment was always at the front, never stationed at a fort, never on duty. It was always on the fighting line. Private Prosser was mustered out May 13, 1864 because he did not survive the war. He was mortally wounded on May 13, 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia.
